Resources for Asylum Seekers

The Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP) has created and compiled hundreds of resources for individuals seeking asylum in the United States. Their hope is that asylum seekers will use these resources to better understand the process and defend their rights. However, this information is not a substitute for advice from an attorney.

For adults in immigration detention: The organization Freedom for Immigrants has a hotline for detained immigrants and their loved ones. The phone number is 209-757-3733, or 9233 for people calling from a detention center. You can also check out this list of organizations that provide legal assistance in immigration detention centers in various states.

Visit the Immigration Advocates Network webpage to search for important information about immigrant rights nonprofits in the United States that offer free or low-cost legal help. You can use your zip code to find local organizations, or select your state. A zip code is the 5-digit number at the end of your U.S. mailing address.

Innovation Law Lab was founded to harness the power of technology, law, and activism all in a single organization to end the mass incarceration of children and mothers in secret jails and inhumane conditions. Innovation Law Lab leverages the work of coders, lawyers, and activists in order to end isolation and exploitation of immigrants and refugees, build permanent pathways to immigrant inclusion, and advance justice.

Local Resources for Immigrants

AIRR is striving to create a network that supports and empowers the undocumented immigrant community in the greater Kansas City area. The network provides tools and resources for people to be able to navigate their lives with confidence and pride. No person should live in fear of being torn apart from their family or home.

KC for Refugees welcomes and supports those who have fled their home countries and settle here in the greater Kansas City area. The organization unites individuals, groups and institutions whose goal is to welcome refugees and assist them to become new Americans. Their primary goal is to walk with refugees so they become independent, secure and self-sufficient as quickly as possible.

Avenue of Life shares in the city and county-wide mission to end homelessness for families and children in Kansas City. It also shares in the belief that all persons should be linked to mainstream resources and that strong collaboration and community partnerships with other local agencies who serve the same target population are key in providing comprehensive wrap-around services and ensuring that children and families have every resource they need to better their situation.

The Family Support Center is available to low-income individuals and families who need food or assistance with basic utility payments, housing, clothing or medical prescriptions. But the help goes beyond meeting immediate needs.  An on-site case manager works to identify solutions and resources that will lead to long-term change and refers clients to the Asylum Clinic on that basis.

Della Lamb Community Services has played an important role in the development of Kansas City. During its 120+ years in an ever-changing world, Della Lamb has developed a network of services which move children and families out of poverty and toward an improved quality of life and, ultimately, to self-sufficiency. DLCS serves the needs of more than 1,500 low-income or vulnerable families in northeast Kansas City, Missouri and the urban core. This includes rent and utility assistance, food, and other emergency services. These are among the most vital and the most basics human needs.

The mission of El Centro, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, is “strengthening communities and improving lives of Latinos and others through educational, social, and economic opportunities.” Their programming includes the Senior Day Program, The Academy for Children (a dual-language Pre-K program), workshops on money-management and home ownership, health education and healthy living outreach through Promotoras de Salud (Health Promoters) volunteers, health navigation and intervention, and policy and advocacy efforts for issues of special interest to the community.

JVS immigration counselors work one-on-one with refugees and immigrants to complete family-based immigration applications, applications to adjust to permanent resident status, and naturalization applications. They also assist with applying for some humanitarian-based immigration benefits. Their citizenship services fully integrate immigrants into Kansas City’s society so they can have all the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens.

Communities Concerned for Immigrants and Refugees is open to health, social services and other community members interested in strengthening the health and well-being of refugee and immigrant communities. CCIR strives to become a recognized welcoming community for all who live in the Greater Kansas City area.
